Temperatures are increasing particularly in cities, where there is scarcity of nature and excess of asphalt and concrete. The resulting heat island effect creates a microclimate that hinders well-being in the city.

The prevailing solution is the widespread use of air conditioners, a technology that consumes large amounts of energy and exacerbates the heat island effect. While it lowers temperatures inside homes, it raises temperatures in neighboring homes and, as a result, throughout the neighborhood.

The communal rooftops of buildings—which are very common in Mediterranean cities like Barcelona—are severely underutilized. Their potential as spaces to compensate for the lack of nature in the city is enormous.
